Oops

Even with getting up early, and planning ahead enough to get coffee and complete an essay test, I still ended up so discombobulated (holy shit I spelled it right first time!) that I thought I had another thirty minutes before my next class, only to realize that had started fifteen minutes earlier. Strange.

It's a busy week here. I'm finally moving out of the house with the crazy woman and into a house with friends. This is a huge sigh of relief for me, but now I have only a few weeks to move everything and clean (to my standards, which are probably far lower than the OCD housemate's) in between classes, papers, and midterms. There are a thousand things I want to do in the new place, but first and foremost is simply getting my stuff there and setting up a place to sleep. The least amount of time I spend in my current situation, the better.

Spent the weekend in Philomath, partly to get away from my house, partly to watch the Superbowl and partly to pick up the set of dishes I'd shoved in my parent's garage for a couple of years. For once everyone there was rooting for the same team, or rather, we were all rooting AGAINST the same team, as we all pretty much hate the Pats. Also, on the Giants was a kid that went to my podunk little high school, and while we weren't exactly friends, it was kinda cool to see someone I know make a hugely important catch in the Superbowl.

Wow, this is a boring post. Point is, I'm moving! YAYYYY! But I'm busy enough that I'm tired just thinking about the things I have to do. I mean, I have to write a 5-7 page paper on the inherent pessimism of the Norse/Icelandic mythology. While finding the inherent pessimism in things seems to fit my mood as of late, I am a bit worried with it being the first actual English class I've taken at college, and therefore the first one I've had in eight years. I feel like I should be a lot more awake and distraction-free to do this.

And finally, while on the subject of school, I am sick and damn tired of archaeology classes. They're all the same.. blah blah sample size, blah blah screen mesh width... I'm sick of it! But I still couldn't set up a site, even with the field school I did (which admittedly was mostly about drinking and fucking around on the beach), which means I probably have to take even more of them next term. At least I'm getting that stupid class out of the way that caused my original graduation date to be delayed by about a year. Turns out that now I don't want to graduate! haha. Yeah, I think I'm going to stay here as long as the GI Bill lets me. Why graduate? Just stupid jobs out there.

I worry sometimes

Actually, I worry a lot, but that's just my nature and I no longer worry about the fact that I worry all the time. This particular worry is something I only worry about sometimes and consider it worthy of further worry... I worry that I'm getting dumber.

When I was in Korean class long, long ago, I noticed that I would have trouble thinking of simple words in English. This wasn't too surprising considering the level of intensity in the Korean program; if I was dreaming in Korean, surely it'd seeped into my brain enough to affect some pretty basic parts of my thought process. But then it started to spread into my writing. Suddenly, I'd be unsure of how to spell things - words I hadn't had a problem with before - and my grammar was even worse. I had to seriously think about where to put commas and quotation marks. I'd never in my life had to think about a comma!

Wednesday I was reading in a textbook about some important thinker. I'd had a class in the anthropology department that covered similar topics so I was rather surprised that I couldn't seem to recall a single bit of information about him or what he did. The name sounded familiar enough though that I went through my computer files and found a five page essay I had written on the dude! Now, not remembering the paper in and of itself isn't too big of a deal. I recall writing every paper in that class in the middle of the night before it was due, finishing barely in time to print it out and pull on a pair of pants before catching the bus. What concerned me is that not only did I not remember any of the content, but I had trouble understanding it. Look, I've never been a genius, so it's not like it was a really high level, mind blowing critique. My past self shouldn't be able to write above the reading comprehension level of my supposedly more-educated present self, right?

And so, I worry.

Wow

So that's what it feels like to drop a whole letter grade in under an hour.

Ugh, and I came to Kell's to drink beer, watch soccer and maybe hear the Pogues, but ya know what's on tv? Bowling. Seriously, why is this "sport" televised?

Heading to Seattle this weekend for a number of reasons - to give a friend a ride to National Guard duty, to visit an old army buddy - but mainly I'm going to see the Timbers play our rivals Seattle (or rather, 'Shittle' as the Timbers' army soldiers would insist you say it). My buddy Owen, who is giving me a place to say, has informed that, most dissappointingly, I'll have to share the place with a buncha muscley, single, rugby players. How ever will I manage. In any case, he called yesterday to discuss details and I informed him that we need to find out how seating works as I simply can't sit near Seattle fans. He was actually offended by this! Apparently, he's never been to a *real* soccer game. (I guess being a N. American, I haven't either, but this is close enough.) I predict that he'll enjoy himself in the Seattle supporters' section (supposin' they even have one), singing and jeering. Hopefully he'll be entertained enough to make a habit of coming to games.
